 NEW Zenith PILOT CRONOMETRO TIPO

NEW Zenith PILOT CRONOMETRO TIPO CP-2 FLYBACK in bronze and in aged steel

Retail-$7,600

In 2016, Zenith released the ultimate vintage-inspired watch in stainless steel with the limited edition Heritage Revival Cronometro Tipo CP-2. This was a great success for the brand and people all overtook serious notice. To further expand this collection, Zenith released the Pilot Cronometro Tip CP-2 Flyback in two versions at SIHH 2018. One in bronze and one in aged stainless steel. Unlike the special edition version in stainless steel, these new versions have open case backs, which shows off the iconic El Primero movement.

What I like most about these new flyback chronograph’s is that there is no date on either model. They stuck to their guns and respected their history. A date would have ruined this watch and made it look very contrived like they were trying too hard. Another difference between these versions and the limited edition is the color of the dials. On the newest versions, the dials are bronze grained for the bronze version and slate grey grained for the aged steel, not the classic black like on the limited one. I haven’t seen either of these watches in person, but just by my natural instinct, I gravitate towards the bronze version. It looks richer, warmer and more tool watch like then the stainless steel version. When I compare the two watches, the aged steel kind of looks washed out, but I am sure my mind will change when I get to see and photograph them. I did hear from my colleagues who attended SIHH, the aged steel is really nice as well. The size is good at 43mm and I am told is quite comfortable and proportionate on the wrist. Both watches are fitted with oily nubuck straps which give the watches a lot of character. Brown oily nubuck for the bronze version and green oily nubuck for the aged steel. Since these are utilitarian chronograph’s they are water-resistant to 100 meters.
