Will there be a Moon Swatch “Snoopy” edition?
Undoubtedly, the Moon Swatch ranks among the most triumphant watch releases ever, significantly boosting the profiles of both Omega and Swatch through their brilliant collaboration. Recently, Swatch took to their IG and released a brief animated clip which you can check out here, featuring Snoopy with what appears to be a Moon Swatch briefcase, slightly opened with a backdrop of various planets that we have seen the Moon Swatch representing and a pic of the Moon behind Snoopy. This suggests the exciting possibility of an upcoming Snoopy-themed Moon Swatch. In my opinion this will take the Moon Swatch to another stratosphere of collectibility.
For those unaware, Omega’s history with Snoopy goes back to April 1970, where things got pretty intense when an oxygen tank blew up on the spacecraft. The astronauts were in a real bind. But they cleverly used their Omega Speedmaster Professional watches to time the engine burns. This was super crucial to tweak their course and get back to Earth safely. That precise timing literally saved their skins. To give Omega props for how key the Speedmaster was in this precarious situation, NASA handed them the Silver Snoopy Award. That’s like one of the coolest accolades NASA gives out.
Since 2003, Omega has dropped three Speedmaster Professional models to celebrate their 1970 Silver Snoopy Award win. Collectors like to call these the ‘Omega Snoopy’ editions. These are considered some of the most collectible and sought after Omega Speedmaster’s, commanding as high as triple their retail value!
The first model released in 2003 known as Omega Speedmaster Snoopy “Eyes on the Stars” The watch has a representation of the “Eyes on the Stars” patch on the subsidiary small seconds dial at the 9 o’clock position as well as reverse printed on the sapphire crystal caseback. It was limited to 5,441 pieces referencing the length of the mission – 142 hours, 54 minutes and 41 seconds.
The second Omega Snoopy white Speedmaster “Failure is not an option” was released in 2015, A tribute to the 45th anniversary of Apollo 13 and the Silver Snoopy Award that OMEGA subsequently received from NASA, this watch features a white dial with special comic strip inscriptions “Failure is not an option” and a small Snoopy decorating the 9 o’clock sub-dial. On the caseback, a 925 silver Snoopy medallion is surrounded by alluring dark blue enamel.
The most recent Omega Speedmaster Snoopy edition “Silver Snoopy Award” released in 2020 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 Mission and Silver Snoopy Award. It has a silver dial with Ag925, and features our favourite beagle as an embossed silver medallion on the blue subdial at 9 o’clock. He is shown wearing his famous spacesuit, in the exact style of the famous Silver Snoopy Award pin.
On the caseback, Snoopy appears inside his Command and Service Module (CSM) on a magical hand. When the chronograph seconds hand is used, Snoopy takes a trip around the far side of the moon, which has been decorated on the sapphire crystal using a unique micro-structured metallisation. There is also an Earth disc, which rotates once per minute in sync with the watch’s small seconds hand.
So, with the basics covered, the big question is: what’s the Moon Swatch ‘Snoopy Edition’ going to be named and designed like? Maybe ‘Mission to Snoopy’ or ‘Mission to Moonshine Snoopy’, or something even more unique? I’m curious about the case and dial. Will there be a Moonshine Gold hand. So far all the Moon Swatches have retailed under $400. Will this be the one that brings it over? Either way, when you consider the last Omega Speedmaster Snoopy Edition, Silver Snoopy Award retail was $10,600, this will be a bargain! One thing’s for sure – it’s going to be an epic piece, highly desired and definitely collectible. No release dates or further info yet, but my bet’s on a launch around Watches & Wonders at the end of March, or maybe even sooner. Let’s wait and see… stay tuned!
