Nostalgia Meets Innovation, at a Cost

TAG Heuer takes a bold step forward with the release of nine new Formula 1 Solargraph references, reinforcing its position in racing-inspired watchmaking. This colorful launch celebrates an iconic line born in the 1980s, now reimagined for modern tastes. The new models feature a compact 38mm case, an updated ergonomic design, vibrant dials, and TAG’s cutting-edge TH50-00 Solargraph quartz movement. While the tech is fresh, the DNA remains pure Formula 1.

As someone who remembers selling these in the ‘90s when they were quartz-only and under $400, it’s wild to see how far this line has come. Back then, there was no solar component, and yet they were still cool, accessible, and sporty. Today’s versions are certainly cooler — but much pricier, especially considering many of them are made from plastic bio-polyamide.

Case and Construction with a Modern Edge

Depending on the model, cases are crafted from either colored bio-polyamide or sandblasted stainless steel, measuring 38mm x 45.2mm x 9.9mm. They feature an AR-coated sapphire crystal, engraved stainless steel caseback, and 100 meters of water resistance. Although the look is sharp, the lightweight feel of the bio-polyamide case may surprise those expecting a more premium touch.

Solargraph Movement with Everyday Functionality

Inside beats the Swiss-made quartz solar caliber TH50-00. It’s reliable, efficient, and charges through exposure to light. The movement delivers essential functions: hours, minutes, central seconds, and date, with no excess complications — perfect for daily wear or trackside timing.

Dial Variations and Sporty Straps

Dials are available in white opalin, black, or blue, each paired with flange colors in blue, red, green, or black featuring a 60-second scale. The hour markers are black or rhodium-plated lacquered indices with SuperLuminova, while the hands match in material and finish for optimal visibility. Each model carries the TAG Heuer logo, along with FORMULA 1, SOLARGRAPH, and SWISS MADE printed on the dial. The watches come on either a stainless steel bracelet or a rubber strap in black, blue, red, yellow, or green, all secured by a TAG Heuer–engraved steel pin buckle.

Pricing and Perspective

At a retail price of $1,800 on a rubber strap and $1,900 on a stainless steel bracelet, this places these Solargraph models in the premium tier of quartz sports watches. While the specs are impressive and the solar tech adds modern value, it’s hard to ignore the fact that they’re quite pricey for plastic-case watches, especially for longtime fans who remember their accessible roots.

Still, there’s no denying the coolness factor. These new Formula 1 models combine bright colors, racing heritage, and next-gen solar technology — making them one of the most playful and conversation-worthy collections TAG has released in years!

Due to the unpredictable and volatile market on certain Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet watches, prices are subject to change.
