Introducing the first automatic chronograph by A Lange & Sohne- The NEW Odysseus Chronograph
As the first automatic self-winding chronograph in its lineup, the Odysseus chronograph is a landmark release for the German luxury watchmaker, A. Lange & Söhne. In order to maintain the signature dial design of the Odysseus watch family, the company had to develop a unique movement that places both chronograph hands in the center. This design enabled the manufacturer to eliminate the need for totalizers typically positioned at 3 and 9 o’clock, while retaining the familiar positions of the outsize date and day of the week.
What truly sets the Odysseus Chronograph apart is the complexity of its reset-to-zero function. When the button at 4 o’clock is pressed, a remarkable spectacle unfolds. If the minute counter has not yet reached 30 minutes, the minute counter returns to its starting position in the conventional way, while the red chrono seconds hand covers the entire distance traveled within a fraction of a second – one full revolution for each minute measured. However, if the minute counter has already passed the 30-minute mark, both hands advance to zero clockwise. The chrono seconds hand performs a full revolution for every minute required to reach the full hour at lightning speed.
In addition to its stunning mechanical features, the ODYSSEUS CHRONOGRAPH is also designed for optimal usability. The specially sealed, tapered buttons at 2 and 4 o’clock serve a dual function, allowing for the safe and convenient operation of the timepiece. While the screw-down crown is in its normal position, the buttons can start, stop and reset the chronograph. When the crown is pulled, the newly developed mechanism allows for the setting of the date and day of the week.
Crafted by our manufactory, the L156.1 DATOMATIC calibre is an impressive self-winding chronograph movement. Its central rotor is skeletonised, partially black-rhodiumed, and equipped with a centrifugal mass in 950 platinum for efficient winding. With a full winding, the mainspring barrel offers a power reserve of up to 50 hours. To ensure optimal rate accuracy, the oscillation system has a balance suspended beneath the balance bridge, beating at a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour. The hand-engraved stylized wave motif adds a stylish touch, alluding to the watch’s water resistance and its suitability for sports settings.
The Odysseus Chronograph features an impressive three-part stainless steel case with a diameter of 42.5 millimeters, which is robust enough to withstand pressure up to 12 bar, making it suitable for sports and leisure activities. The watch features matted surfaces with chamfered edges, creating an impressive light pattern that extends to the lugs and links of the solid stainless steel bracelet. The dial’s special architecture creates an illusion of depth, a feature shared by previous ODYSSEUS models. The black main dial has a textured surface, with notched baton appliques made of white gold and a subsidiary seconds scale underlaid with concentric circles. A palladium-colored flange ring with a printed two-part minute scale frames the dial, with the scale for fractions of a second positioned on the outer circumference and the scale for minutes and seconds arranged further inside. The number 60 at 12 o’clock and the red chrono seconds hand, printed in red, accentuate the sporty-elegant appearance of the watch.
Four years ago, the Odysseus collection elevated A. Lange & Söhne’s reputation as a leading luxury sports watch brand. With a history of crafting watches from precious metals, venturing into stainless steel was a bold move, but one that paid off tremendously, attracting a new generation of watch enthusiasts. The limited edition Odysseus Chrono, like its predecessors, will be highly sought-after, with only 100 pieces available exclusively at boutiques. The price is to be determined
Due to the overwhelming demand and limited supply, this watch will be commanding a premium over the retail price in the aftermarket.
Due to the unpredictable and volatile market on certain Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet watches, prices are subject to change.
