Earlier this year at SIHH in Geneva, Audemars Piguet released the 37mm Royal Oak Frosted Gold collection. This was a big hit amongst collectors, enthusiasts, press and the like! I am happy to report that Audemars Piguet have released the Frosted Gold in a 41mm size in white gold and blue dial and it’s a limited edition of 200 pieces.
It took great effort and months of trial and error to alter the surface of the gold in such a way that it sparkles when catching the light, while retaining the soft, clean lines that define the Royal Oak’s form. Such a delicate balance is difficult to achieve: nothing is added, nothing is removed, yet the watch is transformed. This was all achieved by hammering the case and bracelet in an original and proprietary way.
The dial is Blue with “Grande Tapisserie” pattern, white gold applied hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating.
The movement is the AP Selfwinding Manufacture Calibre 3120 featuring Stop balance when setting time, Oscillating weight with ceramic ball bearings,Bevels of the bridges are diamond graved and Inverted snailing on bridges. It has 280 individual parts and features the functions of Hours, minutes, center seconds and date.
All this doesn’t come cheap though. It retails at $55,000. So there is roughly a 5k premium give or take for the hammering work. If this watch was available in white gold without the hammering it would be around 50k because that’s what the pink gold version goes for. Please don’t get me wrong if money were no object this would be a piece to own 100%. I totally appreciate the technique, innovation and originality of this piece because it took ingenuity to execute and at the end of day gold is quite soft. It’s quite impressive to look at, but when you think about it, the steel version with the same blue dial without the hammering goes for under 18k (which is still bloody expensive for a simple stainless steel three handed watch with date) so I have a hard time wrapping my head around the price. If they made this watch in steel for under 20k with the hammering, there would be nothing to think about! But this watch isn’t being targeted towards me. It’s for that super wealthy dude who wants to ball like he’s a retired Navy Ship captain who won the lottery. I am jealous!
This is quite a limited piece and I am sure it must practically be sold out but I can help! Contact me HERE to get started…
