For the 4th time, Tag Heuer has released a Gulf Oil watch special edition. The very first was in 2005, the second in 2007, the third in 2009 and now this one in 2017. What’s special about this paerticluar version is it’s for the 50th Anniversary of the Gulf Oil Stripes.
For the record, I am NOT the biggest fan of NEW Tag Heuer watches but this one is a must have . I have always loved the Tag Heuer Monaco(especially the vintage ones) because they are so original and iconic. I mean what exudes cool reborn more than a watch once worn by the legnedary, Steve McQueen? He was once known as “The King of Cool” and this watch fits that description perfectly! The NEW one reminds me of a vintage watch but executed with modern sophistication and technology.
The dial also distingusihes itself from all the other models in the way it has been configured. Those iconic Gulf Stripes make their presecene known to the right hand side of the dark navy blue dial. This provides contrast and is the “ying” with bold pops of color to the very subdued navyblue “yang” on the left hand side of the dial. There are two registers for the chrono in the shape of the rounded square shaped case, one at the nine o’clock position which is mins of the stop watch and the other one at the three o’clock postion for the seconds hand of the watch. There is also a date function at the six o’clock position. This proprietary rounded square shaped case is 39mm and is constructed out of stainless steel with a crown on the left hand side of the case while their are angular chronograph push buttons one on the right hand side. The same Caliber II movement that powers the Moncao watches in Tag Heuer’s core collection powers this special edition. It’s completed with a blue calfskin racing strap with orange stitching resembling the iconic colors or the Gulf Logo (located just above automatic above the six o’clock position). This watch is a US exclusive and will be sold online for pre order till Sept 15th and retailers and boutique’s after. The watch will retail for $5,900 and even though it’s not numbered, I have a feeling it won’t be available for very long…
