Just when we all thought that the Rolex Daytona with the black ceramic bezel that was released last year is the HOTTEST & hard to get Rolex, think again! Please don’t get me wrong, the stainless steel Rolex Daytona with black ceramic bezel is till impossible to get, very sought after and commanding thousands over retail! However, this has been trumped by the NEW s/s Rolex Sky Dweller in stainless steel that was released this year at Baselworld. Specifically the one with blue dial! Who would have thought!!!
Well for starters, up untill this year, The Rolex Sky Dweller was only available in 18k white gold, 18k Everose gold and 18k yellow gold. All these precisous metal versions whether on a strap or braclet retail between 40-50k. I understsand that this is Rolex’s most complicated watch, but that’s alot of money! It’s an annual calendar GMT protected by 11-14 patents depending on the particualr model. This is the first time Rolex has released this model is stainless steel. The best part is the price. It retails for $14,400 in stainless steel and is available in three dial variations of blue, black and white. The blue dial is the hottest and most hard to get one. Personally I am not really a fan of the blue dial version.
Rolex really cleaned up the dial on this NEW stainless steel version. Instead of Arabic numerals & Roman numerals that are available on the precious metal versions, this NEW stainless steel version has indices. It definitely makes the watch look cleaner, symetric and more sophisticated. Just to be clear the bezel is made out of 18k white gold on the stainless steel version. Unless you have a phenomenal relationship with an authorized retailer and or you spend a quarter of a million dollars a year in watches, good luck at trying to find it at retail. My reliable sources are saying that this watch is commanding close to 20k and in some case even more!
Honestly, I can’t imagine anyone wanting the white gold version at more than 3.5 times the price now that the stainless version is available. Not only will the stainless steel version (especially the blue dial) command thousands over retail but I am sure there will be a massive waiting list. As I have mentioned before no other watch company other than Rolex can play the supply and demand game better! We will just have to wait and see what happens…
