In 1948, the first IWC Mark XI was sold. This style and design has been one of the most iconic designs for IWC but has also influenced many company’s to follow by example. The NEW IWC XVIII Edition “Tribute to Mark X1” is a must have limited edition piece that’s somehwat attainable in the world of watches and limited edtions. I know the numerical font for the numbers are different but at a quick glance it really look like a mini IWC Big Pilot from the 2002 era.
The statinized stainless steel case on THE NEW IWC MARK XVIII EDITION “TRIBUTE TO MARK XI” is 40mm in diameter and almost 11mm in height has a black dial featuring a cross marked by the four yellow rectangles at “3”, “6”, “9” and “12 o’clock”. These rectangles, along with the baton hands and the triangle at “12 o’clock”, are coated with luminescent material, which ensures clear legibility at night. The Mark 11 was sold with a green nylon strap – also known as a Nato strap – for decades. The new version comes with a green textile strap. The watch, which is water-resistant to 6 bar and has a date window, is powered by an automatic 35111-calibre movement and has a 42-hour power reserve. With its soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields and a front glass secured against displacement by sudden drops in pressure, it takes up the tradition established by its historic forebear. This model is limited to 1,948 watches – a tribute to the year in which the first Mark 11 was sold: 1948.
I haven’t seen this watch is person but this is certainly something remeniscent of IWC’s past that I was once very familiar with. I was lucky enough to know about this brand when I was just 13 years old back in 1990 when no one knew what it was. I grew up in the watch industry. The average person still has no clue about the brand but the awareness has definitely heightened over the years.
I am sure this watch will sell out quick because the price point is $4,150 which is spendy for a three handed watch with date and no in house movemet . When you compare this to a current Mark IWC XVIII which is $3,950 retail this is not bad for a watch that’s limited numbered and cooler at $4,150. This watch is exclisvely available through Harrods in London till end of Sept and will officially be sold in the US at the end of October at IWC Boutique’s.
