Arnold Palmer was an American professional golfer, who is generally regarded as one of the greatest players in professional golf history. He won numerous events on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, dating back to 1955. Nicknamed “The King”, he was one of golf’s most popular stars and its most important trailblazer, because he was the first superstar of the sport’s television age, which began in the 1950s.
Not only was Arnold Palmer one of the greatest golfers to have ever played the sport he was also the first Rolex golf ambassador in 1967.Arnold Palmer is the second golfer in history to receive the Congressional Gold Medal. This needs to be approved by two-thirds of the Congress & Senate. The very first Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to George Washington in 1776. Since that time, 141 medals have been issued.
In 2007, Arnold Palmer was amongst five of Rolex’ greatest sporting legends who got together at Rolex headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. This included; 3 time gold medal olympic skier, Jean-Claude Killy; Racing legend, Sir. Jackie Stewart; Golfing legends, Gary Players, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus.In the words of Arnold Palmer. “Rolex has shared every second of my time for the last 51 years.”
He was responsible for making golf accessible to a mainstream audience and his accolades include; winning 92 overall victories including 4 Masters. He was also elected PGA Player Of The Year in 1960 and 1962.
Whether on the golf course or in life, Arnold Palmer was photographed wearing his Rolex timepiece. It’s very sad that we lost this iconic legend on on September 25, 2016 at the age of 87.
He will be sorely missed by gold enthusiasts and humanitarians around the world. He was a great example of a true champion and gentleman on and off the course!
