I thought I would take this opportunity to let you all know my top Rolex picks to own for the future. Most of the watches I mention are almost impossible to get, will hold their value better than any other Rolex within the collection and can be worn everyday. So without further a due.
1. NEW Rolex Air King ref#116900 bk
wrist shot of the NEW Rolex Air King ref#116900 bk retail $6,200
I think the world has been waiting a long time for a watch like this to come along! It’s an homage to aviation while combining the elements of the iconic Rolex Explorer 1. It made its official debut this year in March at Baselworld 2016. This watch has a 40mm stainless steel case, is chronometer certified, anti magnetic and is the first watch to use a very cool stylized logo that we haven’t seen before from Rolex. This watch retails for $6,200 and is a must have for any newbie or watch collector. You can read my detailed review of the NEW Air King, here
At the moment the NEW Air King is pretty much sold out at most boutiques and authorized Rolex retailers . Out of all the watches in the Rolex collection, the NEW Air King is without a doubt my favorite!
2. Rolex Submariner No-Date ref# 114060
wrist shot of the Rolex Submariner No- Date ref# 114060 retail $7,500
The Rolex Submariner is the most recognizable professional diver’s watch in history. Most watch brands that make a professional diver’s watches either copy this watch to the letter or use it as a basis of inspiration. Usually people who buy the Submariner, purchase the version with date. If you look at the earliest Submariner’s from history they were made without dates. In my opinion the Rolex Submariner with date is an eye sore. That bubble over the three o’clock position breaks up the symmetry of the dial and it looks very pedestrian. The Submariner No Date is not as common and has a crazy coolness factor. Retail $7,500
The vintage ones from the fifties without date are the most sought after and collectible watches out there today. In 2012 I purchased this watch for my father. He has small wrists and has never really worn bigger than 36 mm his whole life. At 40 mm he loves it and can’t imagine wearing anything smaller.
3.Rolex GMT-Master II Day/Night ref# 116710BLNR
wrist shot of the Rolex GMT-Master II Day/Night ref# 116710BLNR retail $8,950
The Rolex GMT-Master II Day/Night was released at Baselworld 2013. Initially the watch had mixed reviews. Historically, Rolex never made a black and blue GMT-Master bezel. Like anything NEW there is criticism involved from gut reactions good or bad. To be honest I wasn’t sure how I felt from my initial reaction but as time has gone on I have grown to love it and so has the rest of the watch collecting world. It has become highly sought after, collectible and cool. It’s affectionately known in watch circles as “The Bruiser” or “The Batman” It retails for $8,950. It’s always sold out at stores and boutiques it will probably hold it’s value better than any regular Rolex professional sports model.
This is the first time I have seen a company execute a bicolor bezel in ceramic and it’s amazing. This gives hope for the world to see a black and red ceramic bezel like we have seen on past Rolex GMT-Master II models. We were lucky to see the bezel in bicolor once again when Rolex released the GMT-Master II with a ceramic Pepsi (blue/red) bezel at Baselworld in 2014. This watch was only available on the 18k white gold model but rumor has it that its being discontinued. That means there is a possibility that the Pepsi ceramic bezel could be had in stainless steel in the future.
Personally, I like the all black ceramic bezel GMT-Master II pictured below version the best.. I think it’s a good price at $8,450, more versatile and is completely timeless. You get the attributes of a Submariner with so much more for $100 less than a Submariner. It’s also more elegant because of the brushed and polished oyster bracelet.

4. Rolex James Cameron D-Blue Deep Sea ref# 116660 dbl
wrist shot of the Rolex James Cameron D-Blue Deep Sea ref# 116660 dbl retail $12,350
This watch is a special edition model that was released in Aug of 2014 to commemorate James Cameron’s courageous solo decent into the deepest part of the Mariana trenches. This has become the holy grail of ultimate divers watches to own. It’s 44 mm, constructed out of stainless steel, water resistant to 3900m/12,800ft. It has a blue black dial like the color of the ocean with Deep Sea written in green which was the color of James Cameron’s vessel.
Some retailers are lucky if they get one of these per year. They have a list of over 100 people who want this at any given time, It’s not numbered or limited but it is a specialty piece to own for the future. The retail is $12,350 which is just $300 more than the regular Deep Sea with all black dial and all black bezel, retail $12,050 . At it’s highest point it was commanding almost $15k when it first came out. You can still find it going for over retail on certain websites and from private individuals.
Not only is it collectible ,it wearable and big! I know that watch world feels that the Deep Sea is top heavy and has too narrow a bracelet but I don’t care when it comes to the JCDS (James Cameron Deep Sea). This is a cross between a Submariner and GMT-Master II Day/Night in terms of it’s aesthetics but on serious growth hormones! Those who want that big Panerai divers watch look but want something even cooler this is the watch for you! Fit it on a Rubber B strap and you are good to go!
If you are lucky enough to find any of these watches with the exception of the all black GMT-Master you will definitely pay full retail. They are not the most expensive watches that Rolex makes but I think they are the most useful, elegant and masculine watches that Rolex manufactures!
PLEASE NOTE- ROLEX HAS NOT HAD AN OFFICIAL PRICE INCREASE IN 4 YEARS. THEY ARE DUE VERY SOON! WHEN THEY DO HAVE A PRICE INCREASE, I AM SURE IT WILL BE SIGNIFICANT!
