Swatch blew the doors off the watch world when they released Sistem 51 in 2013. Swatch Sistem 51 is a mechanical self-winding automatic watch made of 51 parts entirely manufactured in Switzerland held together by one single screw. In fact this is the only mechanical watch in history that’s entirely made by machines and not assembled my human hands. These watches until now were only made in translucent plastic.
Swatch recently released the Sistem 51 in stainless steel. As much as the Sistem 51 is no fuss, automatic and fun to collect in plastic the NEW steel version is a little more serious and buttoned up . It’s nice to have a more traditional option for the work environment or going out. Swatch Sistem 51 in plastic retails for $150. The NEW Sistem 51 in steel will retail for $195 for the strap versions and $235 for the two tone bracelet models. At the moment these are all three handed watches with date functions like the original models that debuted in 2013.
Since Swatch has a lug system that’s proprietary. So it’s quite limiting with the leather straps that can be put on these watches. In other words you are stuck with whatever assortment of leather straps that Swatch will release for these models. It would have been nice to be able to put other leather straps with more character but we will have to wait and see how they look in the flesh! I am sure this model will transition into many other variations. Let’s be honest in the watch world under $250 is an absolute bargain for a Swiss automatic watch today. This watch will release the second week of September and I am sure will be a sure fire hit!
