At Kingsley 1945 we are constantly pushing ourselves to do something original and unique. As I am a distributor for the West Coast I get to fulfill my dreams and help design or give my input that may/may not end up coming to life!
Over a year ago, good friend and Kingsley 1945 Founder, Ramon Kingsley and I were having a conversation on design and what our future watches are going to look like. Since I am a huge fan of the iconic California dial from 1936 I bounced that idea around to do one on our future models. Ramon being right in synch had already thought of it. A few month’s ago I saw a prototype and was kind of blown away. This prototype was made in steel and had a black “California” inspired dial with blue hands in an entirely NEW Type III case that I had never seen before. This case was adapted from a pocket watch case from the 1930’s with a huge onion crown. It looked modern yet felt old worldly . This was my chance to further suggest something unique that I had never seen before but was familiar with.
Two years ago I was thrilled to co collaborate with Ramon on a design that is called “Member” series. You can read about our “Member” series, here. This called for the dial being stripped down to it’s brass plate without any writing or markings in a hand finished proprietary process. This makes the watch look totally different and raw. I thought why not apply this to Ramone’s NEW California dial . Ramon was kind enough to make me the first prototype and I was excited to receive it this week. When I opened the box, it exceeded my expectations! This is what I have been waiting for. The NEW 45 mm trench case is solid and less thick than our other cases . It’s constructed out of Steel with black PVD. The onion crown is a nod to and old school pocket watch crown from the 1930’s and is executed so effortlessly. This also ties in with a Pilot’s watch. The “Cali Member” dial is in perfect contrast to the steel black PVD case and has a really hand assembled feel. To top it off Ramon added incredible steel blued leaf style hands to complete this masterpiece. Since it’s a sandwich dial it has so much depth but is very simple and clean at the same time.
As this is a limited edition prototype we have decided to use a Swiss Quartz ETA movement in the NEW “Cali Member”. This is just in the meantime while we are developing a nice hand wound or automatic movement for a future production piece. Due to the limited nature of these California Dials and what it takes to hand finish them to our specs, The NEW “Cali Member”will retail for $1,600. Honestly this is the first quartz watch I have worn since I was 12 years old. I am a purest and would never wear a quartz watch. Because there is no seconds hand on this watch, the way it’s built, designed and executed, I don’t even think about the movement because it’s exactly what I wanted! This watch is available in a steel finish, a steel black PVD finish and a steel bronze PVD finish all for the same price. It’s also our first watch with a solid caseback which makes it feel solid throughout!
