I often get asked by clients, “what’s a really good elegant and casual rose gold watch to wear on a rubber strap ?” I always get stumped because it’s kind of an oxymoron. There are very few brands that do it right but you are definitely going to pay premiums for the ones that do! Much is the case for the NEW Patek Philippe 18k rose gold Aquanaught Travel Time ref#5164 R 001 that was released at Baselworld 2016.
In 2011, Patek Philippe debuted the stainless steel Aquanaught Travel Time ref#5164 A 001. The press, collectors and the like went crazy for it! It was very well received. This was the first time Patek released an Aquanaught with a complication of dual time zone and date function in stainless steel. 5 years later we are now seeing this in a NEW rose gold version ref#5164 R 001.
This boasts sophistication and elegance to the core. It’s for that gentleman/women who wants something more refined from the run of the mill Everose Rolex, Audemars Piguet or Hublot. THis watch is 40.8mm in size, has a gorgeous brown embossed dial and brown rubber strap. The functions include; hours, minutes, sweep seconds hand, date dual time featuring local and home time.
The stainless steel version isn’t cheap at $34,000! This NEW rose gold version is almost 20k more at $51,031! Is it worth it?In my opinion you can get a few really nice watches for this price but it’s all subjective. I know it’s complicated but at the end of the day it’s on a rubber strap. In general I think the higher end watch company’s are getting greedy with the jump from steel to an all gold watch. The premiums are out of control! Patek is not known for making inexpensive watches so it really doesn’t matter in this case. I think it achieves a goal that hasn’t been filled for the upper echelon client who wants something no other brand offers in a precious metal .
