Iconic cigar brand, Cohiba, celebrates their 50th anniversary this year. They have decided to do it in style by partnering up with Zenith watches to release two limited edition watches. This watch is known as the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster 1969 for Cohiba. It comes in stainless steel limited to 500 pieces for the world and in 18k rose gold limited to 50 pieces for the world.
Other than the case materials, strap colors and applied elements on the dial both watches are the same. They are both 42mm in case diameter, feature a Havana brown dial and emblematic Cohiba motifs. It has a double AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire caseback engraved with Cohiba’s 50th anniversary logo, and it is water resistant to 30 meters. The movement is the Swiss automatic Zenith in-house caliber El Primero 4061 with 31 jewels, 36,000 vph and a power reserve of 50 hours. It features a silicon lever and escape wheel, is COSC-certified as a chronometer and the rotor has Côtes de Genève finishing. The stainless steel version is fitted on a brown alligator strap with stainless steel pin buckle while the 18k rose gold version is fitted on a black alligator strap with 18k rose gold pin buckle. The watch is presented in a wooden box in the colors of Cohiba.
From 1966 until 1982, the Cohiba brand was exclusively used as an institutional gift by the Cuban Government to foreign statesmen and diplomats. Christened Cohiba in 1966 and officially registered in 1969, the name of the brand comes from the term used by Taino Indians to describe the rolls of tobacco leaves, which were the ancestors of cigars.
