Normally I wouldn’t write about some this like this but I thought since I started my career with Swatch, it would only be fair to talk about the return of Swatch Pop. It was originally referred to as “Pop Swatch”. Maybe it’s because I am feeling some sort of nostalgia or maybe it’s because I just returned from the coolest fortieth birthday bash in NYC that was eighties themed. Anyway you slice it, these watches were as much as eighties pop culture as the eighties hit movie “Back to the Future.”
I remember selling these original accessory watches that allowed wearers to attach Swatches directly to clothing. I had never seen anything like this before. I will be forever grateful to Swatch for introducing me to the world of pop art, fashion, music, pop culture, time, mechanics an supply and demand. This has shaped my reality and made me who I am today!
Even though I collected a lot of Swatch watches, I owned just two Pop Swatches. Both were designed by fashion and Punk icon Vivienne Westwood. One was called Putti and the other was called Orb. They both came in special packaging. I never wore either of these watches but there was something cool and special about the design and concept .
They were completely unique and out of the box, no pun intended! I know these watches are considered plastic, disposable, quartz watches but if there was no Swatch there would be no Swiss watch industry today! Swatch Pop is part of the original Swatch collection and a symbol of change and innovation despite their quirky design and colors. Back in the eighties their original retail price was $80 and today their new are only $85. I know Swatch Pop is not for everyone but it’s nice to see that Swatch is honoring their original collection.
The heart and soul of the NEW Swatch POP Collection comprises nine watches in designs guaranteed to let the imagination run wild.
Three stunning black and white pieces – POPdancing, POPmoving and POPlooking – salute graphical purity. They are joined by a trio of colored creations – POPalicious, POPiness and POPpingpop. Neon meets pop art with a splash on POPover, POPtastic and POPthusiasm.
