In the watch business when you think Chanel, the J12 ladies/unisex fashion watch comes to mind. For this Baselworld 2016, Chanel has released a very serious and cool mens watch known as “Monsieur”.
What’s so serious and cool about it? Well for starters it has a movement that was designed and manufactured from start to finish by Chanel. It’s also the first legitimate complication from the brand. It’s a jumping hour with a retrograde minutes display, Even though it’s complicated its clean. This jumping hour display has a digitized style arabic numeral which is highlighted in a window at the six o’clock position. At the twelve o’clock position you have a three quarter circular retrograde minutes display with a sub seconds display directly in and underneath it to complete the circular display. When I first saw the picture of it I thought it looked like a stylized version of the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde.
This most impressive part is when you flip it over and you see the movement which is referred to as black anthracite and the name Chanel escapes you immediately! I straight away felt like I have seen this high quality finish somewhere before and then I realized that this is the work of none other than independent watch maker, Romaine Gauthier. Not the entire movement but some of the wheels are produced by him in accordance with Chanel’s specs of course! This makes sense as Chanel is an investor in Romain Gauthier. I was fortunate enough last year to not only have dinner with Romain Gauthier but I also interviewed him which you can listen to here!
