Back in the day, my first real watch was the Rolex Air King. Even though it was only 34 mm in size and a three handed watch I couldn’t believe it! It was somewhat affordable for a serious watch brand and I was just 19 years old! I felt on top of the world. Like I had arrived and was a part of something special. The price tag at that time was $2,200.
At Baselworld 2016, Rolex just released a NEW Air King. This Air King is 40 mm in size with a polished bezel, constructed out of stainless steel and has a very interesting an unusual dial . It’s a combination of the Explorer1 3,6,9 applied numeral dial and printed digitized white numbers. It’s almost like a modern day California dial but it’s not. I think the contrast is absolutely fantastic! Because we haven’t seen this sort of dial before from Rolex, the first reaction is to reject it. However the more you look at it the more you fall in love. It’s also the only time we are seeing Rolex written on the dial in green with a gold emblem crown and green seconds hand. This is the same case the Milgauss uses but the dial is sportier and more everyday wearing. I love how “Air King” is written on a dial which is a subtle but important nod back to the original Air King model from the 1950’s.
The movement is the in house Rolex calibre 3131 movement which is chronometer certified and has quartz like accuracy. It has a 48 hour power reserve and an bright chromalight display with long lasting blue display at night.
I am not a fan of so much writing of the dial. The most appealing thing about the Air King is it’s simplicity. I feel like “Oyster Perpetual” part written under Rolex is unnecessary and so is the “Superlative Chronometer, Officially Certified” written under “Air King”. That being said I like this watch very much. I have to have one! It’s modern, sophisticated, a great size and somewhat timeless and the price tag is right at 5,900CHF and the official US retail is $6,200.
