Recently a who’s who list of pop culture icons received the Medal of Freedom from President Barrack Obama. The list included; Bill and Melinda Gates, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Vin Scully, and Ellen DeGeneres and NBA Legend, Michael Jordan.
While Michael Jordan was receiving his medal from the President, he was spotted wearing the undeniably iconic, IWC Big Pilot’s watch in Platinum ref IW5002-02 (blue dial) pictured above. This was the perfect watch for him to wear. It’s bold, recognizable and made out of the noblest of all medals, platinum. It also matches his blue suit and looked proportionate on his wrist, The average person wouldn’t have a clue what it is even though it’s a clock on the wrist. That’s the irony with a watch like the IWC Big Pilot’s watch. It’s massive and identifiable but no one other than the person wearing it and a real watch guy/girl would know what it is.
This watch originally came out in 2002. I remember owning this watch in stainless steel with a black dial. It was one of my favorite watches of all time and even left a mark on my wrist to remind me of it’s stealthiness. This watch changed the way we wear big watches and blew the doors off and opened the flood gates for other companies to manufacture Pilot’s watches. This Platinum version above was always held in the highest regard because it was made in very limited quantities and was over three times more expensive. I use to admire it sitting in the showcase of the watch retail store that I once worked at. I believe the last retail of this watch was around 40k.
