The IWC Portuguiser was invented in 1939 when two Portuguese settlers commissioned IWC to make big watches with pocket watch movements . This year IWC has decided to honor it’s founder, MR FA Jones. with the NEW Portugieser Tourbillon “D.H. Craig USA” L.E. Only 27 of these watches will be produced for the world. The number 27 signifies how old Jones was when he started IWC back in 1868.
The special edition carries the description “D. H. Craig USA.” The same name was engraved on the exquisite Jones 2N Pattern H caliber. This was a tribute by Jones to his uncle Daniel Hastings Craig, a successful businessman and role model who probably also offered financial support when his nephew established his Swiss watchmaking company. As part of the launch of the special edition, IWC will also restore a historic street clock in New York City together with the organization Save America’s Clocks and display a small special exhibition in the IWCboutiques in New York and Los Angeles.
This NEW limited edition piece will exclusively be available at IWC authorized retailers and boutiques starting this month Oct 2016. Each person who buys this specialty watch will get a a numbered Santoni passport holder as a reminder of Jones’s journey to Europe as a young man and a copy of the book “F. A. Jones – His Life, Legacy and Watches,” too.
The watch is constructed out of 18k red gold and is 43mm in case diameter. The dial is silver plated with 10 black hand appled Arabic numerals wile their is a sub seconds hand at the six o’clock position and a Tourbillon at the nine o’clock position. The movement is the 98,900 which is in the 98,000 calibre family.
The 98 calibre, which was manufactured from the mid-1930s for the hunter pocket watch, has been regularly improved by IWC for over 80 years. Since it is so ideally suited for large hand-wound wristwatches, it is no coincidence that it is very closely associated with the story of the Portuguese wristwatches. One of the highlights in the calibre’s history was the anniversary Portuguese wristwatch unveiled in 1993 with the 9828 calibre, which among other things featured a balance with shock-resistance. With an elongated index and a modern shock-absorbing system, the 98290 calibre, first used in the Portuguese F. A. Jones in 2005, combines tradition and technological progress. Movements from the 98000-calibre family are also found in the Portuguese Minute Repeater and the Portuguese Tourbillon Hand-Wound.
Considering some watch companies are incredibly greedy charging close to 100k for watches that are far less complicated, The NEW IWC Tourbillon “D.H. Craig USA” L.E. is priced somewhat decent at $57,000.
