After being in this business for more than half my life you would think there is not much else to learn. I was in retail for a majority of my life. The past 9 years I have been doing my own thing out of which the last 4 has been dedicated to my luxury timepiece concierge business. The day I stop learning is the day I am done with this business period! I love what I do and I am constantly learning and applying it daily.
I am NOT the biggest soccer fan, but I definitely grew up around it since I was raised in England half my life. I love that side of my personal life. England is where I feel most at home. It’s almost like the way I feel being from Boston. No matter where in the world I am if I meet someone from England or Boston, there is immediate respect and usually great conversations ensue. It’s always a nice surprise and cool at the same time.
Most of my business is done sitting in the worlds greatest restaurants, cocktail bars, and speak easy’s. So recently I was at my fave restaurant at the minute, Carbone in Las Vegas. If you haven’t heard of or haven’t eaten at Carbone, you must make a ressi while you’re in Vegas. It’s the best ! I met this father and son from Liverpool England. They were incredible friendly and kind people. They are massive supporters of the the Liverpool FC. We struck up a conversation because I noticed that the father was wearing some sort of black customized Rolex watch. I am extremely familiar with this customization to Rolex watches. Most of the company’s doing it right are out of England. These companies include Bamford Watch Dept and Pro-Hunter. I honestly thought it was one of those. The watch was an all black customized Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 pictured above.
After talking to the father and son and doing some further research, this watch is customized by a company called Design Plus 31. I am not sure where they are based out of but they are overseas. According to what I was told from the nice family from Liverpool and what I have read, this watch is a tribute to legendary Liverpool FC Footballer, Steven Gerrard. Where there would normally be a circular minute indice at the 8 o’clock position is replaced by a digitized numeral 8 in red which was Steven Gerrard’s number at Liverpool FC. The seconds hand and inner dial ring is in red as well. Red is the color of Liverpool FC. The caseback is laser engraved with an image of Steven Gerrard and with a number out of 186 pieces. Underneath the image is his signature.
Personally I think it’s a cool watch. It’s definitely not worth the money at 15,000 pounds which is almost $19,000 dollars. I suppose if you are a die hard Liverpool fan and you have the money to do it, why not! I would have to think like the other company’s who customize Rolex watches with all black finishes that the process would be the same, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon). The current retail of the current Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 is $10,400. So when you look at what you are getting for an extra 9k premium it’s not a lot! Doing any modifications or customizations to a Rolex watch completely voids the manufactures warranty. That’s why they give you their own warranty. I like that besides the 8 in red there are no other markings on the dial as some of the other companies do which cheapens it. I love the red accents on the watch which provide a great contrast to the all black finish. It’s nice to learn about something NEW from another part of the world and to be able to share it with you all. Please email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any further pertinent info on this watch.
