I can’t believe that there are some people out there who have no idea who Russell Peters is. For those of you who don’t know or have only heard the name in passing, he is one of the biggest comedians in the world for the last 10 years! Russell is a canadian born Catholic of anglo indian descent. His late father was born in Bombay, India and worked as a federal meat inspector; Peters regularly features stories about him in his comedy work.
What makes Russell Peters interesting and controversial at the same time are his multicultural crowds which he equally rips apart regardless of sex color or race. He hits on those obvious but painful stereotypes and spares no one. He even makes fun of himself and his own culture and upbringing. For some it is a very tough pill to swallow but for most that attend his sold out shows he is a hilariously brutal comedy icon that says what we are all thinking but would never say.
I knew that Russell likes the finer things in life but I didn’t know know just how much until I saw his recent comedy special on Netflix, “Almost Famous” On this comedy special he is performing to a sell out crowd in his hometown in Canada wearing a $75,000 watch. Not just any watch but The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in platinum to be exact!
Most indians when they reach success of epic proportions buy a flashy yellow gold Rolex Day/Date “President”. Yellow gold looks good on our skin tone and is considered a benchmark of success. Not for Russell Peters. He knows what this watch is. He wants to wear the most expensive professional sports models in the Rolex collection made out of the most precious of medals in platinum and yet the average person has no idea what it is!
This was a very well thought out decision on his part and I have a lot of respect for him. This is not a watch that is commonly seen on the wrist or TV. Being in the business my whole life it’s the first thing I noticed when I watched the special on Netflix. This watch was very well received when it came out in 2013 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. You can read my full review of this watch, here !
