Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 55 (Ref. 510401) Limited Edition of 100 Pieces Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 48 (Ref. 510301) Limited Edition of 1,000 Pieces
My dream has come true. IWC will release two Heritage Big Pilot’s watches. A 48 mm and 55mm size. The original IWC Big Pilot’s watch from the 1940’s was 52 mm in case diameter. This was the biggest wristwatch made by IWC.
Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 55 (Ref. 510401) Limited Edition of 100 Pieces retail $14,800
IWC has trumped this by introducing a 55mm Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 55 (Ref. 510401) Limited Edition of 100 Pieces for SIHH 2016. What I love most about this watch is that it has the propeller shaped steel blue hands with super luminova like the heritage models from that time period. The matte black dial is super clean and has amazing super lumina for contrast and legibility at night. One thing thats stands out is that the case is made out of titanium making it half the weight of steel for balance. 55,mm is a huge piece! The movement is the hand wound IWC-manufactured calibre: 98300 with 46 hour power reserve.
This is limited to 100 pieces for the world and will be exclusively available at selected IWC boutique’s around the world. The only thing I don’t like is the sub seconds hand above the six o’clock marker. They should have kept it completely historically accurate but good or bad evolution is inevitable. One thing that’s nice on this new model is that it has a screw in crown with friction clutch to prevent overwinding. I just confirmed that due to the demand less than a dozen pieces will come to the US IWC Boutiques. Good luck trying to get one !
Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 48 (Ref. 510301) Limited Edition of 1,000 Pieces retail- $13,400
The second model IWC will release at SIHH 2016 is the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 48 (Ref. 510301) Limited Edition of 1,000 Pieces. This is also constructed out of titanium but is 48 mm in case diameter. This also has a sub seconds hand above the six o’clock marker with a date function at the bottom of it which is completely overboard in my opinion. This also has a matte black dial with steel blued propellar shaped hands with super luminova. This watch is limited to 1,000 for the world and will also be available exclusively at selected IWC boutique’s world wide. The movement is the IWC-manufactured calibre: 59215 hand wound 8 day. This 8 day reserve can be seen visibly through a small aperture on the case back.
Since both models will be exclusively available at selected IWC boutique’s around the world, I wonder if we will see a production non limited piece in steel? Titanium is a nice touch and a modern day way of executing a historic & iconic piece. It would nice to see a steel model since this piece was originally made in steel. Maybe the 48mm in steel without a sub seconds hand with blued hands? Why not right! A boy can dream….
