It’s officially day two of the SIHH 2016 watch fair. Cartier has released some interesting pieces. Their newest collection is known as Drive.
This is an entirely new watch case for Cartier. It’s available in steel and in 18k pink gold. The dial options are available in white guilloche or a black grey. It’s available in three different models; hours, minutes, small seconds, and date, and second time zone, a day/night indicator, a large date and small seconds. Lastly for that complicated wristwatch lover it’s available in a Flying Tourbillon with “Poinçon de Genève” certification.
Cartier carefully drew its inspiration of the NEW Drive from the lines of classic cars. From the signature Cartier patterning of the guilloché dial, which resembles the design of radiator grills, to the bolt-shaped winding crown. A closer inspection will reveal that the Maison took these distinct car design inspirations, reinterpreted, and enhanced them to meet the exacting standards of watch connoisseurs.
I do like this watch. I think the new case is interesting because it’s not a traditional round or square. It provides the familiarity with the classic Cartier Roman Numeral dial and guilloche pattern but ads a layer of sophistication with the mechanic complications. I think it will do well. To get an amazingly refined Cartier in stainless steel in a brand new case with an in house movement for under $6,500 to start is just outstanding!
