I have never been a fan of quartz watches except for Swatch watches. I think dress watches or fine watches with style and heritage should be automatic or mechanically driven.
There are some exceptions to the rule but I still put up a good fight! Baume & Mercier just released the NEW Classima moonphase in stainless steel with a quartz movement. Let me go on the record and say, this watch should have been executed with an automatic self winding movement. I guess to keep this under 2k in price, they needed to have a battery driven quartz movement. To be honest. I would have preferred and automatic movement even if it costed a couple of hundred dollars more, but that’s just me.
This is a highly stylized timepiece from a great watch company. Baume & Mercier make an amazing product. The new Classima Moonphase is a great way for someone to dip their toe into luxury without breaking the bank.
The case is 40 mm in size and constructed out of a polished stainless steel. The dial is silver with applied roman numerals and indices. The hands are rhodium plated and leaf shaped. The moonphase display is incredible contrast displaced under the roman numeral 12, while a date display is subtly and cleverly placed above the roman numeral six. The strap is black alligator and has a steel triple fold buckle with security push pieces.
This watch is an amazing value for $1,850. The case back of the watch is nice and opened in the middle and can accommodate a personal inscription message or initials and a date. If this watch had a self winding movement it would be even more of a home run!
