Ressence has just released the first mechanical watch in the world that can be seen underwater regardless of viewing angle! This watch is known as the Ressence Type 5.
This is achieved by by having all 142 components, including the dial, immersed in 37.5 ml of oil. The huge advantage of using oil is that it completely negates what is known as the total internal reflection. Typically, under water, a traditional diver’s watch needs to be viewed straight on in order to be read properly – otherwise refraction turns the glass into a mirror. But not with the oil-filled TYPE 5 . The use of oil ensures complete legibility whatever the angle of view. This is a massive first for a mechanical watch!
The NEW Ressence TYPE 5 is crownless – in other words, the case-back is used both for winding and setting the time of the watch. However, to ensure maximum water-resistance, a new case-back has been specially developed for the TYPE 5 . Dubbed the Ressence Compression Lock System, or RCLS , it has a system for the locking and compression of the gasket, with two positions, ‘lock’ and ‘set’.
The watch has an amazing bellow and temperature gauge. The bellow is a self-equilibrating pressure-balance system.
The innovative designed bellows extend or compress to compensate for changes in the oil’s internal volume between -5 degrees and +55 degrees Celsius. This range covers all extreme temperature situations the watch might undergo. +10 to +40 degrees Celsius – the white zone – corresponds to the watchmaking industry’s norm.
This new divers watch from Ressence is constructed out of titanium and is 46mm in case diameter. Due to the fact the watch is crown less and the caseback is recessed, the watch seems smaller than it is when it’s fitted on the wrist.
What amazes me most about this watch is that none of the main functions are compromised with this innovation. Everything is executed so flawlessly because of it’s well thought out original design.
The watch is designed to meet the ISO 6425 standards and is able to withstand extreme conditions – but to do so with the modernist refinement characteristics of RESSENCE, right down to its seamlessly integrated uni-directional bezel. The retail of this watch is $35,800.
