Well before the James Bond Franchise and the Omega Watch company joined forces into the power house it has become, the watch of choice for 007 was always Rolex. In 1973, actor Roger Moore took over as the next James Bond and made his debut in the movie Live and Let Die! This movie was a huge success at the box office ! The watch he wore was a Rolex Submariner ref#5513. This wasn’t just any Rolex Submariner ref#5513.
This watch was modified by the production designer on the film, Syd Cain who for all intensive purposes was a real life Q like in the James Bond movies. What’s even more amazing is that the the watch was simply a movie prop and doesn’t function!!! Some of the modifications done to the watch included, the teeth on the bezel were recut to look like that of a circular saw that Bond could use to cut through rope which held him prisoner at one of the most critical points in the movie. Another modification includes a tiny whole in the bracelets end link where a wire can be threaded to give off the appearance that watch can generate a strong magnetic field.
Last month on November 8, 2015 this watch was auctioned off by Philippe’s of Geneva for 365,000 Swiss Francs or $363,000! This is outstanding considering that this watch doesn’t have a watch movement inside and in 2011 it sold for $200,000.
This is the ultimate collectible James Bond watch. When you open the watch, the case back is signed with Roger Moore’s signature and a small 007 next to it.
