Watches in Wonders 2015 just came to an end Oct 3. Panerai released watches from 3 collections. The watches that are creating all the buzz are from the Luminor 1950 collection. The two watches are known as the The Panerai PAM00629 & The PAM00617, Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC – 47mm. Both the Panerai PAM00629 & PAM00617 have the same 1950 Luminor 47mm case in titanium with DLC coating.
The PAM00629 has the very cool and iconic California dial where the top half of the dial has roman numerals and the bottom half of the dial has Arabic numerals. This has batons for the quarters and a triangle at 12. This dial was originally made for Panerai by Rolex in 1936. The hands are gold and the indexes are painted on the dial. I really wish this had blued hands like the original from 1936. As a purist, my first reaction to looking at this watch was, this is weird. A Luminor 1950 case in black with a California dial. WOW! As I looked more closely at it, I realized it works. The dial is so cool and vintage that it is so arresting and timeless. It can make any watch look bad ass! Even though it has gold and not steel blued hands like the original, the black DLC titanium case and hands work well together to achieve a modern day vintage look. The reliable P.3000 in house calibre Panerai movement is the engine powering that powers the PAM00629. It features a quick-hour adjustment, as the hour hand can be moved both forward and backward in one hour increments, in order not to disturb the precision of the watch. An aged brown strap with ecru stitching is fitted on this watch. This is will be produced in a quantity of 300 pieces for the world and will retail for 11,400 Euros or about $12,800.
The Panerai PAM00617 like the PAM00629 has the same 1950 47mm titanium case with black DLC coating. This watch essentially has the classic 1950 3 layered sandwich dial. The four numbers of 12,3,6 & 9 with seconds hand next to it. In between the numbers are indices which are also sandwiched. Above the six o’clock position is the OP logo which I am not a fan of at all. I really feel that it is unnecessary and overdone. The whole point of this watch is that it supposed to be a clean and understated tool watch. The hands are black with super luminova. Personally I wish this watch had gold hands for better contrast and visibility. It also would make the watch look more vintage and original. This watch is powered by the Panerai P.3000 in house 3 day movement, is fitted on a an aged brown strap with ecru stitching. This is will also be produced in a quantity of 300 pieces for the world and will retail for 11,400 Euros or about $12,800.
I am a much bigger fan of the Panerai PAM00629 than the PAM00617. It something that made me stop to think because I have never seen this combination before. It’s quite bold and refreshing. The PAM00617 is something we have all seen before in one way or another in the last 15 years. Both watches are quite limited and am sure will sell out quickly because of their great price points and exclusivity.
