Shinola are an American Company based in Detroit. They emerged onto the watch scene back at Baselworld 2012. President Clinton recently toured their factory and proudly wears the brand. I believe them to be clean, bold and well made.
Shinola just released their first watch made out of titanium, known as the Black Blizzard Diver. This watch is available in two sizes of 42 and 48 mm. I love the layout and how clean it is for a chronograph as well as the contrast, but the movement is quartz. I know this watch has a big date complication below at the six o’clock position, but quite honestly it gets lost being right under the third subdial and to me is not nearly as important as having the movement be automatic.
I just feel that when you are making an effort to make such a nice looking watch with subtle touches of a nicely finished brushed titanium case and bracelet, a black unidirectional rotating bezel with luminous numbers and an onion style crown, why not go all the way with a nice reliable automatic self-winding movement.
Today the market is getting competitive in the intro luxury market of $1,500-2,000 price point. I think it’s a valiant effort on Shinola’s part to make a watch like this in titanium, but I think their real value is in the three to five hundred dollar price range because at fifteen hundred dollars for the NEW Black Blizzard diver, it’s a little ambitious.
