Those of you out there who are unaware, an altimeter is an instrument used to measure the altitude of an object above a fixed level. This instrument is very useful to those in aviation, science, mountaineers and exploration.
Oris has just released the worlds first mechanical altimeter watch. This watch is known as the Big Crown Propilot Altimeter.
This watch reeks utilitarian, masculine, tool watch. I love it! The case is made out of stainless steel and is 47 mm in diameter, while the crystal is sapphire and AR coated and water resistant to 100 meters. The watch has two stainless steel crowns with a patented Oris altimeter adjustment and venting crown (PTFE vapour barrier).
The dial is black and has printed Arabic numerals filled with SuperLuminova, same as the hour and minute hands. The altimeter hand is made from laminated carbon fiber and the watch is fitted on a textile strap with stainless steel folding clasp. It is also available with a leather
strap or a steel bracelet.
The movement is the Swiss automatic Oris caliber 733 (base Sellita SW200) with 26 jewels, 28,800 vph with a 38 hour power reserve and features an integrated Swiss mechanical barometric altimeter and barometer movement.
The altimeter of the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter is activated by unscrewing the crown into ‘Position 1’, indicated by a red ring. Once set, the watch shows the current altitude via a yellow indicator, and the corresponding air pressure via a red indicator. When the crown is pulled out into ‘Position 2’, the altimeter can be calibrated. Once set, the watch shows the current altitude via the yellow indicator, and the corresponding air pressure via the red indicator. The altitude scale is around the outer dial ring; it can measure altitude up to 15,000 feet or 4,500 meters (two models have been produced, one with a scale in feet, one in metres). The air pressure scale is recessed between the altimeter scale and the central dial. Once the altimeter is no longer required, the crown can be returned to Position 0 by screwing it down.
The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter will be available in Spetember and will retail between $3,700 and $4,000 which is a hell of a value for what it is
I am happy to see Oris re-inventing themselves with something so revolutionary while staying true to their heritage and producing fine mechanical wrist watches that are well priced.
