Panerai have recently decided to make a change to the strap that is fitted on the PAM00514 reference. You can read my full review of the the PAM00514 here.
Currently the PAM00514 comes on a vintage black calf strap with contrasting white stitching which retails for $270. From this moment going forward, the PAM00514 will be fitted on an antique brown alligator strap which retails for $430 .
Personally, I am in two minds about this decision. I appreciate that one will now get the nicer alligator strap from the calf, but at the same time the vintage calf makes this watch look historic, vintage and timeless in an everyday sort of way, which is the whole point of the 1940 3 Days in my opinion. I have owned Panerai watches with the antique brown alligator straps and let me tell you, once it breaks in, it has a nice vintage 40’s look to it. At the end of the day, the vintage black calf can always be purchased in addition if you ever wanted to change the look and have another option.
