I normally don’t tend to write about Urwerk because it’s way out there in terms of design and functionality. For all intensive purposes, Urwerk are like the Lamborghini or Bugatti of watches. They are innovative, complicated, well finished but bloody expensive!
I am intrigued by the NEW URWERK UR-105M because of it’s design and functionality. This watch boasts a 39 X 53 mm case made out of titanium which is reinforced by stainless steel for ultimate durability and strength. This watch took it’s inspiration and design from the middle ages where knights in shining armor would risk their lives for honor and glory, with only their faith and shield for protection.
In the words of the Martin Frei of URWERK,
“The case of UR-105M was developed as an armor. The visible screws on the bezel not only bring a distinctive esthetic to the watch, but also tack the steel armor onto its titanium body. This shield protects the mechanism (the heart of the watch) from the outside world’s aggressions.
When we get to the center, we see how four satellites slowly orbit. Each of these satellites is visible during their 60-minute journey along the minute scale. A circular PEEK (PolyEtherEthercetone) canopy with openings enhances the current hour. Once the hour has elapsed, the satellite guided by a Geneva cross rotates and continues around its orbit for another three hours before returning to the center stage. Completing the indications, running seconds and power reserve are displayed laterally on the case band.
The functions of this watch include: hours, minutes, 10 seconds on the front of the watch, a power reserve indicator, an oil change indicator and timing adjustment screw on the back of the watch or control board. The oil change indicator is very useful because sometimes we don’t know when to get our watches serviced. The timing adjustment screw enables you to regulate the timing of the watch by turning it left or right depending if it’s gaining or loosing time.
