In the world of Pilot’s inspired watches, IWC normally gets all the credit. There is no doubt they have done a remarkable job of popularizing this style of watches that remains part of their DNA.
Zenith is also one of the great manufacturers today that produces incredibly well made Pilot’s inspired watches. They really don’t get the credit or the respect they deserve in my opinion.
They are actually the only brand to own the trademark ‘Pilot’ which is allowed to be written on the dial. Pilot’s watches are also very much a part of their history and DNA.
Zenith pride themselves on making watches with in-house movements at very reasonable price points that appeal to the true collector and purest. The Zenith Type 20 Extra Special was released at this years 2014 Baselworld in April.
The release of this watch flew under the radar because it’s the only Pilot’s inspired watch they make in their collection that doesn’t use an in house manufactured movement. To be honest, I don’t know how important that is when its functions is time only. Besides if the movement was in house the would raise the price of the watch significantly.
The fact that you can obtain a watch like this under 6k for the incredible value of $5,400 is just amazing. I believe the movement is a automatic Sellita 300 movement that has been highly modified by Zenith. The caseback is a solid caseback, so it’s not like the movement is exposed anyway.
In my opinion, when you buy a Pilot’s watch from a high end watch maker like Zenith, you are paying for design, function and reliability. This watch has all these components.
The case is 45 mm in size and constructed out of solid stainless steel. The caseback is engraved with Zenith aviation instruments. I have held the case on this watch and it’s very solid and well finished. The onion style crown is a piece of engineering art and unlike other Pilot’s watches, this onion crown is rounded and has no sharp edges that could leave marks on the wrist or can hurt the wrist. The dial is a bold matte black with all 12 Arabic Numerals made in Super Luminova. The hands are contrasting and made out of Satined black ruthenium. The crystal is domed sapphire and has AR coating on both sides. Completing the design, the watch is fitted on a Patinated nubuck with stainless steel pin buckle.
