Today the SIHH watch fair in Geneva Switzerland has just come to a close and we are already seeing Pre-Basel novelties from various watch companies. For those of you who are unaware, Baselworld is the biggest watch and jewelry show in the world that will be taking place March 27, 2014- April 3, 2014 in Basel Switzerland. You can get more info about Baselworld 2014 here.
Alpina is one of my favorite watch brands in it’s price point. They remind me of IWC 20 years ago, making very well made products using ETA and Valjoux clones at an incredible value.
This year for SIHH 2014, Alpina has released the Startimer Pilot Black Star Chrono. This stainless steel 44 mm case is black PVD coated for a stealthier more masculine aesthetic. The dial is sunray grey with black subdials and outer dialing, and with applied luminous Arabic numerals which is a very nice touch. This dual registered chronograph is a very clean and minimalist pilot’s watch that is equipped with the Swiss automatic Alpina caliber AL-860 with 30 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 46 hours. Aside from being a great timing instrument, the new Alpina Startimer Pilot Black Star Chronograph is water resistant to 100 metes, has an AR coated sapphire crystal and an exhibition caseback.
Alpina is notorious for their modest price points. I am sure this watch will retail between $3500-5000, which today is a bargain, especially when we are seeing similar designs and finishing for $10,000 and up.
