I can’t really say I am a huge fan of hip-hop or R&B music unless I am at a club shaking my thing after many liquor drinks, yeah right! This month, Canadian rap super star Drake is featured on the July 2013 cover of GQ wearing an 18k yellow gold Rolex Day/Date II with champagne diamond dial, diamond bezel. Rolex has always been a symbol of wealth and status that has been embraced by the hip hop community in videos and style shoots. Usually, this sort of medium can give Rolex a bad name because it can cheapen their image due to a certain type environment or person it’s placed on.
The Rolex Yellow Gold Day/Date II is hardly a watch I would personally wear because its a bit too flashy for my liking, but in this particular situation, Drake wears this watch with style and confidence, making this style shoot look even more effortless and natural. This is a great example of the right style choice between the product and celebrity wearing it. I like the fact the the Rolex Day/Date II doesn’t look inappropriate or ghetto on Drake. He pulls it of with ease because he is masculine calm and confident and happens to be wearing the right clothes. Even though he is only 26, Drake appears more as a man than a boy. In style shoots like this, if the watch is not paired with the right celebrity, it can totally throw of the aesthetic of the entire shoot and detract from the goal. In this case, the watch is a nice accessory that compliments the overall theme. Also, the consumer looking at this photo gets a better idea of the true size and scale of the watch, giving him/her a point of reference.
