This year at SIHH in Geneva Switzerland, Panerai released the new Radiomir 1940’s case in stainless steel, Ref# PAM00514.
I will admit, I had seen the watch once at a Panerai Boutique here in Las Vegas, but I wasn’t impressed when I saw it and tried it on. You see, I like symmetry on my watches and the PAM00514 has a second hand at the 9 o’clock position, when in my opinion, it should have an arabic numeral 9 instead. I also am not a fan of the date because I think it’s excessive, but thats just me.
Even though I would probably not own this model watch, I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the wrist of Dylan McDermott who was seen wearing it on the red carpet of the recent 65th Emmy Awards. I first saw this story on good friend and colleague, Jake Erlich’s, Jake’s Panerai World blog. Sometimes watches look much better on someone else’s wrist, especially a tall hollywood actor at the Emmy Awards.
The versatility of this watch is amazing if you ask me. I really don’t think today anyone makes a better case that can be worn in any situation like the Panerai Radiomir 1940’s case, which was originally made for Panerai by Rolex back in the day.
Today, if you want a Panerai watch and you aren’t sold on the device protecting the crown, but you want something vintage looking, cool, well made and completely manufactured in house, the Panerai PAM00514 is for you. The watch is masculine with the 47 mm case, yet sophisticated because it’s polished with the personalized stainless steel screw down winding crown.
The dial has that historic and classic feel because it is a sandwich dial where the numbers and seconds hand are engraved into the dial, while you get that technical nuance by flipping the watch over and seeing the in house manufactured Panerai P.3000 3 Days mechanical movement at the same time. Finally, the watch is fitted with a nice black calf strap with contrasting stitching, which makes this a great everyday wearing sophisticated watch. This watch is extremely comfortable because of it’s flat back and incredible vintage lugs that hug the wrist.
